Daniel Kwan was born on September 24, 1987 in Westborough, Massachusetts.
Kwan attended Ryerson University in Toronto, where he studied film. It was during his time at Ryerson that he met his future collaborator, Daniel Scheinert. The two went on to form a creative partnership and began making films together.
In 2010, Kwan and Scheinert created the short film “Interesting Ball”, which was a viral hit on the internet. The film featured a man bouncing a ball on different surfaces and was praised for its creative use of sound and visuals.
Kwan and Scheinert continued to collaborate on many projects, including music videos for artists such as DJ Snake and The Shins. They gained further recognition for their work on the music video for “Turn Down for What” by DJ Snake and Lil Jon, which won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Direction in 2014.
In 2016, Kwan and Scheinert wrote and directed their first feature film, “Swiss Army Man”. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as a corpse that washes up on shore and is befriended by a man, played by Paul Dano. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim for its unique story and performances.
In addition to their film work, Kwan and Scheinert have continued to create music videos and commercials. They are known for their innovative and unconventional approach to storytelling, often incorporating humor and surrealism into their work.
After “Everything Everywhere” co-directors Kwan and Scheinert took the top prize from the Directors Guild of America, they’re almost certain to repeat here, as 17 of the last 20 DGA winners have.
Kwan and Scheinert have directed numerous TV shows, including Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, Legion (with Kwan only) and On Becoming a God in Central Florida (with Scheinert only). They were set to direct a TV adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle for Noah Hawley, but the project did not get picked up.
In 2017, the duo announced their plan to write, direct, and produce a science-fiction film in collaboration with their producing partner Jonathan Wang and the Russo brothers. Their project, Everything Everywhere All at Once, featuring Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis, was released in March 2022 and received extensive critical acclaim.
In 2022, Daniels signed a first-look TV deal with A24 and a five-year film deal with Universal Pictures.
He is married to fellow filmmaker and animator Kirsten Lepore.
