Holly Johnson was born in Liverpool, England, United Kingdom in February 1960.
Holly Johnson was also the bass guitarist for the band Big in Japan. Holly was the third of four children and was nicknamed Billy as a child.
Holly Johnson began his education in Liverpool at St Mary’s Church of England primary school and at age 11 went to the Liverpool Collegiate School in Everton. At fourteen, Johnson took on the name Holly, inspired by actress Holly Woodlawn, a friend of Andy Warhol.

After gaining some popularity from being a member of Big In Japan, Holly Johnson collaborated with a group of younger musicians who together would become the nucleus of Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Holly Johnson himself named the new band.
Thus, Frankie Goes to Hollywood was formed in 1980 and released their debut studio album Welcome to the Pleasuredome in 1984 which reached #1 in the UK and New Zealand as well as the Top 10 in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.
This new band quickly gained a name for their stage show which had strong sadomasochistic overtones. Also, Guitarist Brian Nash and backing vocalist Paul Rutherford completed the band’s established line up.
After the band’s reputation grew huge enough to attract record company interest, they were eventually signed to a new record company, ZTT. Holly Johnson gained fame via the phenomenal success of their band debut single Relax, which was a huge controversial hit in 1984.
The band album Liverpool was released in 1986 and reached #5 in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. Frankie Goes to Hollywood had #1 singles in the UK and other countries with the songs “Relax”, “Two Tribes”, and “The Power of Love”.
