Winston Elba, a Sierra Leonean Creole who worked at the Ford Dagenham plant, and Eve, a Ghanaian woman, gave birth to Idris Elba in the London Borough of Hackney on September 6, 1972. Elba’s parents got hitched in Sierra Leone before relocating to London.
Elba, who was born and brought up in East Ham and Hackney, changed his first name to “Idris” when attending Canning Town High School, where he initially got interested in acting.
Idris credits The Stage’s play advertisement with giving him his first major break; he attended the audition and, while playing the part, met his first agent. In 1986, he started working for his uncle’s wedding DJ business as an assistant; a year later, he and a few of his buddies launched their own DJ firm.
At age 13, Idris Elba began driving without telling his parents. At age 14, he even purchased a Mini for himself. Although it was against the law, he got away with it because he appeared older and had a respectable beard.
He also had a girlfriend at the time, a lovely 19-year-old woman, to whom he would pretend to be going to work while actually going to school. But, it all seemed reasonable with a beard and a Mini. But, he spent his first real salary from The Wire on a Dodge Ram 1500.
Elba attended Barking and Dagenham College for a short period of time before dropping out in 1988 and being awarded a spot in the National Youth Music Theatre thanks to a £1,500 Prince’s Trust grant.
In his early career, he took odd jobs like changing tyres, cold-calling, and night hours at Ford Dagenham to sustain himself between assignments. During his teenage years, he worked as a DJ in nightclubs under the stage name “Big Driis,” but it wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that he started applying for television parts.
