Raised by South Korean immigrants parents, Ken soon moved with his family to North Carolina where he spent most of his youth. Ken participated in the Quiz Bowl in his school days and played the violin in the school orchestra. Ken was on the student council.

Ken career finally catapulted after winning the Big Easy Laff-Off in 1995, and NBC president Brandon Tartikoff onvinced Jeong to move to Los Angeles.
