Kim Se-jeong was born on August 28, 1996, in Gimje, North Jeolla Province. However, she moved to Anyang, Gyeonggi and resided with her mother and older brother in her aunt’s home.
When she was young, her parents separated, and her mother raised her and her brother alone. Kim mentioned that she did not communicate with her father until her third year of middle school.
During her school years, she was active in track and field competitions in elementary and middle school, and she also participated in her high school’s Theatre Club. After participating in a competition with a ratio of 3,000 to 1, Kim passed Jellyfish Entertainment’s auditions and became a trainee. She is currently studying practical music at Hanyang Women’s University.
Career:
At the age of 16, Kim Se-jeong participated in the second season of the competition TV show K-pop Star 2 in 2012. Although she did not make it through the second round ranking audition, she was given a second chance when Yang Hyun-suk brought her back as a wildcard for the casting round. During this round, Kim performed a duet of Taeyang’s “I Need A Girl” with fellow contestant Jo Yoo-min, impressing Yang enough to cast them both.
In the final casting round, Kim was teamed with contestants Nicole Curry and Lee Soo-kyung. Unfortunately, she was eventually eliminated from the competition.
Kim Se-jeong, along with her fellow Jellyfish Entertainment trainees Kim Na-young and Kang Mi-na, participated in the reality survival show Produce 101 in January 2016. They competed alongside other trainees for the opportunity to debut in an Mnet project girl group.
On April 1, 2016, the reality show Produce 101 came to an end, and the final line-up of the project girl group I.O.I was announced. Kim Se-jeong was the runner-up contestant, receiving 525,352 votes and officially becoming a member of the group. Kim Se-jeong took her second leading role in the mystery romantic-comedy drama I Wanna Hear Your Song in 2019. In the drama, she played a timpanist who lost her memories due to traumatic events.
