Trace Adkins was born in Sarepta, Louisiana. Adkins maternal uncle was the Christian musician James W. Carraway (1923–2008).
Trace Adkins inclination towards music happened at a very early age when he was 10 . His father bought him a guitar and hired a tutor to give him lessons.
At Sarepta High School, Trace Adkins joined a gospel music group called the New Commitments. Adkins was also a member of the FFA. Later, Trace Adkins attended Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. Adkins left the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs football team after his freshman season due to a knee injury,
